I was super excited to have finally gotten to the Sophie’s Daughters trilogy. After being introduced to Sophie’s Daughters in the first book of Lassoed in Texas, Petticoat Ranch I have been waiting a little less than patiently to finish all 6 books between. I am a fan of Mary Connealy and these books did not disappoint me.
Doctor in Petticoats
Beth and Alex survive a stage coach accident. Beth realizes the derelict in the stagecoach with her is a doctor and she forces him to help tend the injured. Alex finds he can care for the patients as long as Beth is right beside him. . .yelling at him.
Alex saves Beth’s sister’s life, but he only has the courage to treat patients as long as Beth is there. The one way to keep her close it to marry her. Beth thinks he’s a lunatic, but there’s no denying his skill, and she’s so empathic she can see the terrible price Alex pays to help hurting people. Besides, she owes the loco doctor for saving Sally.
She agrees to marry him. Her parents, Clay and Sophie protest the sudden marriage, but when Beth agrees to the marriage they grant their blessing.
And that’s when the real trouble begins. A bounty hunter is on Alex’s trail for desertion from the army. Alex has to live long enough to turn himself in, and then he may face a firing squad. And this all happens right when Alex is getting to be semi-sane and Beth is just starting to like him. (quoted by Mary Connealy)
My thoughts: Through twist and turns this was a wonderful story. Beth is rushing home to get there in time for her sister to get married and the stage coach accident slows her down. While riding back to Texas Beth is thinking her fellow passenger is just a worthless spot in the coach. When they come across the accident he proves to be some help.
Once they get through the accident it is on to more as they start doctoring in Mosqueros, Texas. They make a good team. But then that team is up against the world.
A good read, I highly recommend it and it is a wonderful introduction to Sophie’s daughters after they have grown older.
Wrangler in Petticoats
Sally McCellen finds herself injured and in the care of the biggest wimp she's ever met. Logan McKenzie paints pictures of the wild west—and claims he makes a living doing it. When the two of them see an elk she reaches for her rifle, he reaches for a sketch pad. The word DRAW means completely different things to them. When Sally falls off a cliff practically into his arms, he decides he's keeping her. So far her broken leg is keeping her close, but she's a quick healer and she needs to get some tougher help, because outlaws are hunting hard for the one witness to their crime. (quoted by Mary Connealy)
My thoughts: Another recommendation. It was really fun to learn so much more about Sally’s character. With her being the main character we were able to learn far more about her and her character.
I was definitely surprised by Logan as Sally’s love interest. I had just created a picture in my head of her finding someone with a tougher personality. This definitely brought a twist and some interest to this story.
Sharpshooter in Petticoats
Mandy McClellen Grey, has become the focus of a feud thanks to her husband, who made this mess and then died. Far from home, Mandy, the best little rifle woman in the west, has resigned herself to a lonely life under siege rather than call for help and endanger her family.
Tom Linscott is fed up with waiting for Mandy who should have had the sense to come to him as soon as she finished burying her worthless husband. In fact he'd've come fast enough to dig the hole if she'd've sent for him. He goes to round up his little woman and buys into a heap of trouble from a whole clan of outlaws.
Between Mandy's deadly skill with her rifle, her determination to not bring trouble down on someone she loves, and an ever growing crowd of varmints who want to bury everyone named Grey—and anyone who sides with them, Tom may not survive getting himself hitched. (quoted by Mary Connealy)
My thoughts: I was definitely waiting to find out what would be happening to Mandy. When she married in the first chapter of the first book, I wasn’t sure who the third story would be about. But as we kept coming back to her in all of the stories, I knew that her story wasn’t finished yet. What adds to this story was that many characters from both Lassoed in Texas and Montana Marriages were also included in this story.
I enjoyed the story line here as much as any. That being said it definitely also had the slowest start of any of the books up to this point. Mandy by this time had created herself an incredibly thick skin and that skin could keep any and everyone away from her.
This was a wonderful end to all 9 books in my mind and I would recommend all of them to any one looking for books that interconnect.
